Tips for Credit

  • Almost every credit card company has an app has an auto pay feature – take advantage of this

  • On top of that, if you miss a payment, credit card companies usually don’t report that missed payment until a month later

  • Ways to build your credit without a credit card – give yourself a loan – believe it or not this is possible. There’s apps that can help you do this. I wouldn’t recommend it unless your credit is in really bad shape because you won’t have access to that money until the loan is paid off. – also keep in mind you WOULD have to pay interest – do your due diligence before taking this step

  • You can call up your credit card agency and ask for a credit line increase (CITI and Discover let you do this on the app) – be strategic about this, since you can only do this once every 6 months. ($90,000 cap before they require you to show proof of income) – make sure to ask if they give you a hard inquiry – some do and some don’t

  • Keep in mind you can negotiate with credit card companies to reduce interest rates or yearly payments

  • Be strategic when considering credit cards – some offer points, others cash back, do your due diligence and find what works best for your situation – read up on each card

  • Total debt usage impacts credit score – its recommended to keep this below 30% – but strive to keep this as low as possible

  • If you do not have a credit card and you want to start building your credit history up, I would suggest you going to your bank and seeing if your pre approved for a card. You may be pre approved without even knowing it.

  • Fico Score is made up of:

  • 35% payment history
  • 30% total debt utilization
  • 15% credit history (length of time)
  • 10% credit mix (auto insurance, credit card, loans)
  • 10% new credit (inquiries)
